Jago Grahak Jago: Family jewellers give more value for money spent.

Bought jewellery from your neighbourhood jeweller then relax as you have invested your money in the right place. An Economic Times (ET) article today compares Branded/Online retailer vis-a-vis family jewellers. The comparision is on similar line as we have talked about in a blogpost 2 years ago ( read it here ).

Briefly the ET article talks about:

  • Family jewellers ( like us ) price jewellery on a daily basis giving consumers the best possible prices, whereas online retailers and branded store use a fixed price concept raking in a margin of 50-100%.
  • Family jewellers give a breakup of all the information like weight, making charges, buy back value whereas online retailers/branded stores arent always either so transparent or take their jewellery back or give ridiculously low value in return.
  • This concept of fixed pricing thus goes against the very reason for buying gold/diamond jewellery if it cannot give you a better return.

Mobilizing gold reserves through Gold Bonanza Offer.

Usual Investment Mode: Consumers are investing in gold coins or bars and putting them in bank lockers or home lockers. With gold prices bound to rise in coming years, it makes for a good investment sense. Take a look at the chart for last 35 years of gold prices.

Gold Bonanza Offer: Instead of putting the gold investment in lockers when you deposit the gold under the gold bonanza offer you get an additional 4% interest on the value deposited. The only criterion being a minimum lock-in period of 1 year. At the end of 1 year a consumer can liquidate the gold at the prevailing rate and And since we launched it almost a year ago we have already mopped Rs.35 lacs worth of gold deposit from customers.

Gold Bonanza offer is uniquely run by Kathana Jewellers only.

Tips on finding good diamond deals

We have been going strength to strength by bolstering our diamond inventory, which now stands at more than 78,000 diamonds. SO while on 1 hand we can find you practically any diamond, the immediate thought that comes to mind is how can i find that 1 diamond which is a perfect mix of value and quality.

Here in this post we share tips to get bargains in general:

1) Look for non premium sizes: As discussed in the previous posts size like 1 carat, 0.50 carat, 0.60 carat or 1.5 carat or 2 carat are premium. Look for sizes like 0.95 or 0.57 carat to gain from human idiosyncrasies.

2) Look for better cut : Diamond pricing depends a lot on the visible factor too. So if a diamond looks better, no matter what its grading it is a good deal. One way to identify a good dimaond is going for a TRIPLE-EX which is CUT, POLISH and SYMMETRY all being Excellent. Well there is a premium to triple EXes but you can neutralize that by going for a clarity step down. SO for instance if you are looking for VS1 go for VS2 or VS2 then go for SI1. But going too far down on the clarity scale is not recommended. So the gain in going 1 step down in clarity is more than going for all EXes.

3) A litle bit of fluorescence isnt so bad. Dont always look for NONE fluorescence. A SLIGHT or FAINT fluorescence can save you a lot of money while not affecting the diamond looks as much.

4) Diamond of upto size 0.60 Carats are literally immune to clarity so for a F,G,H color shade you can go upto I1 clarity also.

5) Try Fancy shapes: Fancy shapes like princess, emerald, oval, heart, asscher, radiant, pear, marquise come at a discount as compared to round brilliant cut.

Hope these tips help you save money and make your search for that 1 diamond a lot easier.
After all you now have the E=MC2 equivalent to the diamond search in your hands.

A word of caution: Going for uncertified diamonds is a self rip-off. Please dont do that to yourself.

Independence Day Diamond Deal

It is a well acknowledged fact in the diamond industry that diamonds of 1 Carat Weight sell at higher premium. This is because many of us are obsessed with wearing a diamond that is at least a carat! However if you are not too stuck up with the idea of wearing at least 1 carat, you can earn yourself some really good deal by looking at a diamond size that is slightly smaller than the magical number of 1 carat.

On first look if you look at a 95 cent diamond very carefully you may find it only marginally smaller than a 1 carat weight diamond. Not many will be able to tell that difference easily! So if you are willing to go for a slightly smaller diamond then you may be able to save yourself some serious money. We believe that is what smart shopping is all about.

To add a little objectivity here we are comparing two diamonds which are almost similar in various parameters except their carat weight. Look at the jump at the price when you move from a 96 cent diamond to a 1 carat diamond.

Good time to buy/invest in gold.

Last 2 days have been hectic so i am stealing the time this morning to post this. Gold prices hitting 18,100 for 24k and 17,300 for 22k has definitely brought cheer to the consumers and jewellers alike.
Jewellery buying is becoming cyclical with wedding season and festivities driving the sales. And July month end sees nothing of these two.

Consumers and jewellers have been booking gold for the upcoming festive season and you shouldn't miss out too. Over the past many years this pattern has repeated itself umpteen number of times. And you dont need to be a rocket scientist to guess this time around. Prices will rise when we near the diwali/christmas 2010.

Cheers and happy shopping :)

P.S. Get in touch with us about our "Gold Bonanza Offer" where your investment in gold can earn you 4% interest per annum.

Poem on "Diamond Deal"

Up and Down, High and Low,
Through a longgggg list I go...
Looking for that one perfect piece,
The price of which will please,

And while I did this boring task,
That lasted me over 5 hours,
I thought a few moments I should steal,
To write this horrible poem on the "diamond deal"....

hahaha, thank you for reading through this master piece. The rains and strains have just brought out the poet in me.

Beyond the 4Cs.....

We all know about the 4Cs used to describe a diamond namely: Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat. 4Cs are but a starting point to describe the characteristic of a diamond and hence its value. Its not the complete picture.

This post will talk about the price differences you see in 2 or more diamonds having the exact same 4Cs. Its best we take an example.

If you do a quick search for a
Round shape,
I color,
SI1 clarity,
1 carat,
Excellent Cut.

You will get more than half a dozen diamonds ( this at the time of writing the post..you might get a higher or lower number depending on when you try this search). They have prices ranging from 1,66,000 to 2,19,000. Even though the 4Cs of all these diamonds match there is a huge price difference.

What explains this?

"Other Details"

The answer lies in the oft not discussed/not well understood 'other' characteristics. Besides the 4Cs there are a dozen more parameters described in reports. Keywords like polish, symmetry, fluorescence, Girdle thickness, Measurements, table as a percentage of the diamond diameter, depth as a percentage of the diamond diameter. Online reports will delve into more detailed parameter listing like star length, crown angle, pavillion angle etc. This makes every diamond unique and hence the price differentiation which is calculated using a software which accounts for all the pieces of information mentioned above.

Insist on the Report

Things like location of the impurity whether its on the table or pavillion or near the girdle, similarly feather characteristics are present in the crown or pavillion or near the girdle. Thats why insisting on an electronic format report before buying a diamond is a must. You can clearly see them on the plottings section of the report.

Beyond the Report

Even Things not mentioned on the report also affects the value of a stone like yellow or brown shade(tinge). Diamonds show a tinge of yellow or brown right uptil E color( D being colorless) and hence that affects their brilliance. Yellow tinge is more desirable as compared to brown tinge and thus higher priced.

Summary

So how do we make an informed choice? Go beyond the obvious 4Cs. Most of the online retailers have around 12-14 characteristics mentioned. Besides insist on the Electronic format report( which comes in PDF). Talk to diamond experts and then put your money down.
